The Wonderful Use of Recycling-Innovative Houses Designed from Containers

In the field of architecture, innovation and environmental protection have become the theme of the moment. A house in Bekasi, a suburb of Jakarta, has attracted attention not only as a residence, but also as an example of environmental protection and innovative design.

Atelier Riri and his team took on the challenge of recycling an entire home on a site of only 150 square meters. The house will be home to a young couple and their two children, and will therefore fulfill the needs of family gatherings, parent-child activities, etc., in addition to its basic functions.

The designers interlocked and overlapped four recycled containers with each other to create a multi-layered spatial structure. These containers are used as activity rooms mainly because they have limited space and thermal functions. The complex linear structure not only provides space for growing plants, but also effectively blocks the sunlight from the roof to cool down the interior environment.

The interior of the home is designed to be fluid, with staircases and ramps connecting all levels, and a large overhead space in the center dividing the entire interior. In addition, additional space was created on the roof by utilizing a wooden deck to provide more recreational areas for the occupants.

In order to make the best use of recycled materials, the designers chose recycled pine boards for all the wooden parts, and the metal plates connecting the containers to the doors also make full use of waste resources. Polished concrete was used directly for the floors, and the wooden furniture and brick walls retained their original texture, saving on cement and other building materials.
